Arab Anger Mounts as Israel Ignores US Advice
Amid the ongoing war in Gaza, now in its third deadly month, the Biden administration is facing challenges in supporting the government of Benjamin Netanyahu. Despite calls for a cease-fire from multiple Arab states and entities, the US finds itself standing nearly alone in its opposition. Israel’s reluctance to minimize civilian casualties has drawn criticism from US officials, including Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken. The gap between Israel’s pledges and its actions in southern Gaza has resulted in a steadily increasing death toll.
Limited Concessions and Collapsed Humanitarian Pause
Despite intense talks with Israeli officials, Blinken has only been able to secure limited concessions. These include the entry of some essential supplies into Gaza and a brief humanitarian pause. However, the pause collapsed due to accusations of violations from both sides. Blinken has repeatedly urged Israel to avoid repeating the devastation seen in the northern section of Gaza and to take better precautions to protect civilians. Vice President Kamala Harris and Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin have also emphasized the importance of avoiding civilian casualties.
Disagreements on Goals and a Vetoed Resolution
Israel and the US also disagree on the ultimate goal of the war. While Israel aims to eradicate Hamas, the US advocates for removing Hamas as a governing force in the Gaza Strip. The US government also insists on the inclusion of an independent, sovereign state for Palestinians, a stance rejected by Netanyahu’s right-wing government. At the United Nations, the United Arab Emirates presented a resolution for an immediate humanitarian cease-fire, but the US vetoed it, arguing that the conflict cannot be resolved instantly.
Global Pressure and Domestic Protests
International pressure for a cease-fire continues to mount, with Arab League and Organization of Islamic Cooperation countries demanding an end to Israel’s actions. The United States, however, has faced criticism for not taking a stronger stance. Arab allies like Jordan, a close ally to the US, have expressed disappointment in Washington’s response. As the war persists, both the US and Israel emphasize the challenge of preserving civilian life in Gaza due to Hamas operating within neighborhoods and public institutions. The Biden administration fully supports Israel’s right to defend itself but is facing increasing difficulty in straddling the differences between international and domestic perspectives.
