Army Thwarts Attack on Presidential Palace
Congo’s army successfully foiled a coup attempt early Sunday, apprehending the culprits, which included several foreign nationals, after assaults on the presidential palace and the residence of a key ally of President Felix Tshisekedi resulted in three fatalities in Kinshasa.
Opposition Figure Linked to Coup Attempt
Initially mistaken for Congolese soldiers, the armed individuals were later connected to exiled opposition figure Christian Malanga, who was killed at the presidential palace during a standoff with guards. Malanga had previously issued threats against President Tshisekedi.
International Involvement Unveiled
Brig. Gen. Sylvain Ekenge revealed that among the perpetrators were three Americans, including Malanga’s son. The U.S. Ambassador expressed shock over the involvement of American citizens and pledged collaboration with Congolese authorities.
Escalating Political Crisis
The attempted coup coincided with a parliamentary leadership election crisis within Tshisekedi’s ruling party, complicating the country’s political landscape. Clashes erupted near the presidential palace involving guards of parliamentary candidate Vital Kamerhe.
President Tshisekedi’s Response
While Tshisekedi has not publicly addressed the events, he previously warned of dissolving the National Assembly and conducting new elections if malpractice persists. The situation remains tense as the country grapples with uncertainty following the thwarted coup.
