Accelerating Clean Transportation Transformation
The White House has announced operational changes that aim to accelerate the clean transportation transformation, increase good-paying union jobs, and create healthier communities. In a statement released on Thursday, the White House highlighted President Biden’s Federal Sustainability Plan, which aims to achieve net-zero emissions from overall Federal operations by 2050, including a 65 percent emissions reduction by 2030.
Promoting Sustainable Transportation
As part of the plan, the Biden-Harris Administration has issued new travel guidelines for Federal employees, directing Federal agencies to prioritize the use of sustainable transportation for official and local travel, both domestically and internationally. The guidance specifies that government employees must opt for electric vehicles (EVs) when the cost is less than or equal to the most affordable comparable gas-powered vehicle available. Additionally, EVs should be the preferred choice for employees using taxis and ride-share platforms when they are cost-competitive.
Embracing Rail and Local Travel
The guidance also encourages the use of rail for trips that require less than 250 miles of travel, instead of driving or flying. For local travel, employees will be required to utilize sustainable modes of transportation, including walking or biking, upon arrival at an offsite location. These measures are expected to save taxpayer money and reduce pollution, contributing to the fight against the climate crisis.
Commitments from Rental Car and Ride-Share Companies
In support of the government’s goals, rental car and ride-share companies have made commitments to assist in achieving sustainable transportation targets. Hertz, for example, has pledged to substantially increase EV rentals for corporate travelers next year. Uber is expanding its “green curb at airports” program, which offers riders sustainable transportation options.
California Government’s Pledge
The California state government has also pledged to issue guidance within the next six months, encouraging its employees to opt for electric vehicle options during official travel.
Biden’s Push for Electric Vehicles
President Biden, shortly after taking office, set the goal of ensuring that 50% of total domestic vehicle purchases are electric by 2030. The administration has since pursued various regulations and incentives to support this goal, including proposed rules on emissions and aggressive fuel economy standards. These actions aim to attract private sector investment, create jobs, and promote clean energy development and advanced manufacturing.
“We’re Just Getting Started”
President Biden remains committed to transforming clean energy development and creating good-paying, union jobs. With significant investments already attracted, the administration is determined to continue driving progress in the transition to sustainable transportation and a cleaner future.
