Challenges for President Biden’s Campaign
Sen. Joe Manchin, the Democrat from West Virginia, has announced that he will not launch a 2024 bid for the White House as an independent. This decision removes what would have been a major challenge for President Joe Biden’s campaign.
Focusing on Daughter’s Super PAC
Speaking at an event at West Virginia University, Manchin stated, “I will not be seeking a third-party run. I will not be involved in a presidential race.” Instead, he revealed that he will focus his efforts on supporting his daughter’s Super PAC, “Americans Together.”
Working Towards Unity
Manchin expressed his commitment to finding a candidate who can bring the country together. He stated, “I will be involved in making sure that we secure a president that has the knowledge and has the passion and has the ability to unite this country.”
Previous Speculation
Speculation arose last year when Manchin announced that he would not seek reelection for his Senate seat, fueling rumors about a possible third-party White House bid. Throughout the past year, Manchin had flirted with the idea of a third-party run, speaking about the need to unite the middle and reaching out to the politically homeless.
Challenges of the Current System
However, Manchin acknowledged that the current system is not favorable for a third-party candidate. He said, “The system right now is not set up for it. The long game, maybe we can make a third party viable where it has a process and opportunity. Right now, it’s very challenging. And I’m not going to be a deal breaker or a spoiler. I just don’t think it’s the right time.”
