Speaker Declares Bill “Dead on Arrival”
Republican opposition to the Senate’s bipartisan deal has been steadily growing, with Speaker Johnson declaring the bill “dead on arrival.” He expressed his concern that the bill may be on life support in the Senate, stating, “Republicans simply cannot vote for the bill in good conscience.”
Democrats Accuse GOP of Going Back on Border Policy Changes
Democrats have accused Republicans of reneging on their promise to support border policy changes in exchange for aid to Ukraine. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called the GOP opposition a “dramatic transformation in Republican thought.” He also criticized the House GOP for opposing the deal solely because former President Trump was against it.
Speaker Highlights Concerns with the Bill
Speaker Johnson addressed specific concerns with the 370-page bill, citing examples of problematic sections. He highlighted page 321, which expands work authorizations for illegal aliens, threatening American workers’ wages and acting as a pull factor for illegal immigration. Johnson also pointed out page 116, which endorses the Biden administration’s catch and release policy. He criticized the bill’s shutdown authority, which gives Secretary Mayorkas the power to undermine efforts to address the immigration crisis.
Cloture Vote Scheduled Despite Opposition
Despite the mounting opposition, Senate Majority Leader Schumer has scheduled a cloture vote on the package for Wednesday. However, at least several Republicans and three Democrats are expected to vote against the motion.
