Lawmakers Express Outrage Over Misuse of Funds
Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., has expressed her shock and disappointment over a recent report that revealed Planned Parenthood illegally received over $90 million from the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). The PPP was specifically designed to provide financial assistance to struggling small businesses during the pandemic. Blackburn stated, “While small businesses struggled to make ends meet during the pandemic, Planned Parenthood illegally siphoned over $90 million from the Paycheck Protection Program, specifically designed to help our mom and pop shops keep their doors open.”
Blackburn is not alone in her outrage. New Jersey House Rep. Chris Smith, who also requested the report, voiced his concern that the funds could have been better utilized. Smith said, “This money would have been better spent helping the businesses that were forced to close or providing comprehensive medical support for both women and children.”
Report Reveals Government Funding and Abortion Procedures
The report, requested by Blackburn and Smith, highlighted the federal funding received by several major pro-abortion organizations between 2019 and 2021, totaling nearly $2 billion. Aside from the PPP loans, the organizations received funds through Medicaid, Medicare, and the Children’s Health Insurance Program, as well as federal grants and cooperative agreements, amounting to $148.5 million.
Planned Parenthood, the largest recipient of government funding, obtained $1.78 billion between 2019 and 2021 and performed one million abortion procedures during that time. International Planned Parenthood Federation received $2.03 million, MSI Reproductive Choices received $1.35 million, and four regional abortion providers received $107.74 million in funding.
Planned Parenthood’s Controversial Decision
In 2019, Planned Parenthood declined Title X funding under the Protect Life Rule, a federal grant program that supports family planning and reproductive health services. The rule stipulated that abortion referrals were prohibited, and financial separation from abortion providers was required. The organization’s refusal to comply with these conditions resulted in the discontinuation of family planning grants under Title X for most of its affiliates in 2020 and 2021, as revealed by the Government Accountability Office (GAO).
Average Annual Funding and Abortion Numbers
According to the report, Planned Parenthood received an average of $592 million in federal funding annually between 2019 and 2021. During the same period, they conducted 1.11 million abortions. Planned Parenthood currently operates over 600 health centers across the United States.
