Biden Administration Accused of Hypocrisy
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has called out the Biden administration for its conflicting stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict. Ocasio-Cortez questioned how the administration can claim to be concerned about Palestinian rights while vetoing the UN’s call for a ceasefire and unconditionally supporting the bombing of Gaza.
US Official Responds to Criticism
When asked for a response to Ocasio-Cortez’s comments, a US official defended the administration’s actions, stating that despite a rushed process and lack of consultation, the US engaged in good faith on the resolution. The official added that most of their recommendations were ignored.
Controversial UN Resolution
A UN resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire and the release of all hostages in the Israel-Hamas conflict received support from thirteen countries. However, the US voted against it, while the UK abstained. Robert Wood, the US deputy ambassador to the UN, criticized the resolution for leaving Hamas in place and allowing terrorism to go unchecked.
Israel’s Retaliatory Efforts
The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has caused a divide among US Democrats. Israel’s retaliatory efforts, including rocket fire and ground troops, have sparked controversy. Progressives like Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib have been critical of the US’s support for Israel.
