Influx of Migrants Strains New York City
New York officials are pointing fingers at each other and the Biden administration as the ongoing border crisis continues to weigh heavily on the state. Representative Lawler, who represents New York’s 17th Congressional District, has criticized both Adams and Hochul for their lack of support in enforcing immigration laws and securing the border. The massive influx of illegal immigration has resulted in billions of dollars in costs for the state and the city.
Migrants Disgruntled with Living Conditions
Some migrants bussed to New York City and other sanctuary jurisdictions have expressed frustration with their living arrangements. They claim that the promises made to them, such as decent housing and support finding work, have not been fulfilled. The “tent city” at Brooklyn’s Floyd Bennett Field, where some migrants have been housed, has been deemed inadequate for families with children. Others have also reported difficulties in reaching authorities for necessary paperwork and support.
Blame Game and Mismanagement
Representative Lawler blames the state and the city for mishandling the crisis, pointing to decisions like moving migrants to a nearby high school and disrupting the education of local students. He argues that the city’s interpretation of the right to shelter has led to the belief that illegal immigrants are entitled to housing at taxpayer expense. Lawler calls for a change in policies, an end to sanctuary city practices, and cooperation with ICE.
Republicans Criticize Democrats
House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik also criticizes Governor Hochul and other Democrats for their support of policies that have attracted migrants to the state. She claims that the open border and sanctuary state policies have overwhelmed resources and cost New York taxpayers billions of dollars. Stefanik demands a change in course and an end to the ongoing crisis.
Abbott Accuses Biden of Violating Federal Law
Texas Governor Abbott accuses President Biden of violating federal law by refusing to enforce immigration laws already in place. Abbott asserts that Biden’s policies of granting “mass parole” to foreign nationals who enter the U.S. illegally are contributing to the crisis. Border Patrol and the Border Patrol Council reportedly support Texas in their efforts to secure the border, while facing resistance from the Biden administration.
