Wave of Prank 911 Calls Directed at Elected Officials
Representative Tom Emmer and his family became victims of a terrifying “swatting” incident on Saturday night. Emmer revealed that a false 911 call had led to a police presence at his home, thanks to the malicious act of an unknown perpetrator. Fortunately, nobody was home or injured during the incident. Emmer condemned the dangerous scheme, emphasizing that elected officials across the country have been targeted in similar incidents.
The Wright County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the swatting incident and clarified that officers responded to a call reporting a possible homicide/hostage situation at Emmer’s residence. However, upon investigation, it was determined that the call was a hoax, believed to be an act of “swatting.” The incident is now under investigation by the US Capital Police.
What is “Swatting”?
“Swatting” involves making a false police report to provoke a SWAT team response at the target’s home. This dangerous prank has been on the rise, with several incidents occurring recently, including on Christmas Day.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene and Representative Brandon Williams both fell victim to “swatting” last year. Greene pledged to introduce legislation to address this disturbing practice, vowing to make it easier for law enforcement to apprehend and prosecute the criminals behind the calls. Senator Rick Scott also became a target, expressing his outrage at the wasted resources and the attempt to terrorize his family.
Lawmakers and law enforcement agencies are working together to investigate these incidents and prevent future occurrences. The dangerous trend of “swatting” is a serious concern that threatens the safety of elected officials and their families.
