Sanders Supports UN Resolution for Temporary Ceasefire
During an appearance on CBS’ “Face The Nation,” Bernie Sanders expressed his support for a temporary humanitarian pause in Gaza. He referenced the United Nations resolution that the United States government rejected before the U.N. Security Council on Friday. Sanders argued that Hamas militants want a “permanent war” and highlighted the importance of a humanitarian ceasefire that would include the release of hostages held by Hamas and the provision of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people.
Sanders Condemns Netanyahu’s Approach
While Sanders acknowledged Israel’s right to defend itself against Hamas, he strongly criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s approach. Sanders voiced his concerns about the reported targeting of civilians and the high number of casualties in Gaza. He condemned Netanyahu’s government’s destruction of housing units in Gaza and expressed his belief that continuing to fund the war would be irresponsible.
Division within the Democratic Party
Sanders addressed the concern that the Israel-Hamas conflict could further divide the Democratic Party in an election year. He acknowledged that while the American people were rightfully outraged by Hamas’ attacks on Israel, they are equally outraged by Israel’s actions. Sanders emphasized that people across the country are questioning the allocation of funds to the Israeli government. He acknowledged that this issue could have political consequences but expressed his belief that President Biden would still win the election.
