Pentagon Chief Addresses Concerns
Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has made it clear that there were no gaps in authorities and no risk to the department’s command and control. In a press conference, Austin addressed concerns about who was in control at the Department of Defense during a time of heightened tension in the Middle East.
Clear Chain of Command
Austin emphasized that either he or the deputy secretary was in full charge at every moment. He assured that new procedures have been put in place to prevent any lapses in notification in the future. These procedures include immediate notification to key officials across the department and the White House Situation Room, should the deputy secretary need to temporarily assume the duties of Austin’s office.
Apology to President Biden
Austin revealed that he personally apologized to President Biden for not immediately informing him about his diagnosis and treatment. He praised Biden’s response, stating that the president showed grace and a warm heart, displaying full confidence in Austin.
No Intention to Resign
Despite the controversy, Austin rejected the notion of resigning from his position as Secretary of Defense.
Drone Strike and Telegraphing
Austin addressed questions regarding a drone strike that took place while he was in the intensive care unit. He explained that the strike had been planned and he had made recommendations to the president. The decision was made, and the authorities were passed down to the Central Command commander. Austin emphasized the need to minimize collateral damage and ensure all aspects were in order before carrying out the strike.
Transparent Response
Austin stated that the United States vows a “multi-tiered response” and did not speculate on the telegraphing of strikes or the movements of Iranian proxy leaders.
Explanation, Not Excuse
Austin provided an explanation for his hospitalization and absence from the Pentagon. He underwent a minimally invasive procedure to treat prostate cancer. Unexpected complications led to severe pain and subsequent hospitalization. Austin assured that the deputy secretary assumed his duties and that the White House was notified.
A Personal Health Message
As part of his explanation, Austin revealed his prostate cancer diagnosis and urged other men, particularly older men, to get screened regularly. He emphasized the importance of early detection and treatment, sharing his own experience as an example.
