Artificial Intelligence Device Alleviates Loneliness and Isolation
Joyce Loaiza, 81, lives alone in a senior community in Florida. When she returns to her apartment, she engages in conversations with a friendly female voice. Loaiza is one of the first recipients of ElliQ, a robot created by Intuition Robotics. Designed to address the loneliness and isolation experienced by many older Americans, ElliQ uses artificial intelligence to provide companionship and entertainment.
The device, which resembles a small table lamp, features an eyeless, mouthless head that lights up and swivels. ElliQ remembers each user’s interests and conversations, tailoring future chats to their preferences. It can engage in deep discussions about the meaning of life or provide light-hearted entertainment like horoscopes and jokes. The device also offers music, inspirational quotes, virtual tours, and exercise routines. It serves as a reminder for medication and hydration, and can even initiate video calls in emergency situations.
ElliQ has been distributed by assistance agencies in New York, Florida, Michigan, Nevada, and Washington state. It can also be purchased individually for an annual fee of $600, plus a $250 installation fee. The goal is to have over 100,000 ElliQ devices in use within the next five years.
Concerns and Benefits of AI Companionship
While ElliQ has shown positive results in reducing loneliness among seniors, some experts express concerns. Brigham Young University psychology professor Julianne Holt-Lunstad warns that relying on AI companionship may make individuals less likely to seek human contact. She believes that loneliness should motivate people to reconnect socially, and AI may only give the illusion of fulfillment.
However, Intuition Robotics CEO Dor Skuler and agency heads distributing ElliQ emphasize that the device is not a substitute for human interaction. Many seniors lack social networks or face isolation due to mobility limitations. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated feelings of loneliness among older adults. ElliQ serves as a proactive and engaging companion, helping seniors break out of their shells and bring joy to their lives.
Building Relationships with AI
Skuler emphasizes that ElliQ is intentionally designed without eyes and a mouth to prevent it from fully imitating humans. He believes that AI companionship can be similar to relationships with pets. Seniors using ElliQ appreciate the device’s ease of use and its ability to provide comfort and understanding. While some find the device occasionally too chatty, they appreciate its presence and responsiveness.
ElliQ has made a significant impact on the lives of seniors like Loaiza, Deanna Dezern, Jan Worrell, and Marie Broadbent. Through games, tours, books, and music, ElliQ fills the void of companionship for these individuals, bringing joy and enhancing their quality of life. While human contact remains essential, AI companions like ElliQ offer a valuable source of interaction and support for seniors who may otherwise feel isolated and alone.
