Fans express their dissatisfaction during a Providence-Georgetown game
Despite leading the Friars to seven March Madness tournaments in recent years, the departure of head coach Ed Cooley did not sit well with the Friar Faithful. As the Providence-Georgetown game was about to begin, fans in the arena made their feelings known by chanting a vulgar phrase directed at Cooley.

The Georgetown Hoyas have endured a rough patch in recent seasons. Once a perennial contender, the team’s performance declined significantly, going 75-109 in the past six seasons and only making the tournament once under Cooley’s leadership. The team ultimately fired Cooley after an early exit in the Big East Tournament.
“I have deep roots in the Providence College basketball program and I am grateful for the support I received from the college, President Kenneth Sicard, and Athletic Director Steve Napolillo,” Cooley stated when he left for Georgetown in March last year. “I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to work in this exceptional conference with talented players, coaches, athletic directors, and fans. I am looking forward to embracing my new opportunity.”
Cooley expressed his eagerness to hit the ground running and build relationships in and around the District of Columbia. However, it appears that the Hoyas’ previous struggles have carried over into this season. With a record of 8-11 and only one win in conference play, Cooley’s tenure at Georgetown has been challenging.
