Snell’s Motivation
As the 2013 NBA champion, Snell has set his sights on making a comeback to the professional basketball scene. However, his desire to return to the court goes beyond personal ambition. In a recent interview with Yahoo Sports, Snell expressed that his main motivation now lies in something much bigger: his two sons.
A Deadline and a Special Benefit
In order to secure a 10th year of service in the NBA, Snell needs to be signed to an active roster by Friday and play for the remainder of the season. Achieving this milestone would make him eligible for a special medical plan provided by the Players Association Union upon retirement, according to Yahoo Sports. This premium plan would cover Snell’s entire family, including his sons who have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.
A Personal Journey
Snell’s journey began when his son Karter, at the age of 2, was diagnosed with autism. This revelation prompted Snell to reflect on his own experiences and eventually led to his own diagnosis at the age of 31. Speaking to “Today” in June, Snell described the diagnosis as a “relief” and a moment of clarity, finally understanding why he had always felt different.
A Mentor and Role Model
Having embraced his diagnosis, Snell has taken on a mentor role with his teammates, many of whom are a decade younger than him. He finds joy in sharing his knowledge and experiences with the younger players. Snell stated, “I want to inspire people and help as many people as I possibly can.” His mission extends beyond the basketball court as he aims to be a role model for his son and others.
An Inspiring Partnership
Partnering with the Autism Society of America, Snell hopes to make a positive impact and change lives through his journey. He wants his son to know that he is there for him, having experienced similar challenges himself. Snell aims to grow together with his son and accomplish great things, demonstrating the power of unity and support.
A Career Summary
Throughout his NBA career, Snell has maintained an average of 6.1 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.1 assists. With his comeback, he not only seeks personal success on the court but also endeavors to make a lasting impact off the court.
