Rays Express Support for MLB Investigation
Major League Baseball (MLB) has placed Wander Franco, the esteemed MLB player, on administrative leave following allegations of his involvement with underage girls. The Tampa Bay Rays, Franco’s team, have expressed their support for the ongoing investigation conducted by MLB. In a statement, the Rays stated, “We support Major League Baseball’s decision to place Wander Franco on Administration Leave. The Tampa Bay Rays are dedicated to upholding high standards of integrity both on and off the field. We appreciate the understanding and patience of our fans and supporters as this process unfolds. We will have no further statements on this matter until MLB completes its process.”
Allegations Surface and Rays Take Action
The allegations against Franco became public knowledge in August, with the first complaint filed in July. In response, Franco vehemently denied the allegations during an Instagram Live session; however, the Rays still decided to place him on the restricted list. As the allegations came to light, the Rays started removing images of Franco from their surroundings, and there has been a noticeable absence of Franco merchandise in the team store within the ballpark.
Uncertain Future for Franco’s Baseball Career
Franco’s last game was played on August 12, and there are concerns that he may never return to the major leagues. This is a significant blow to the promising young star who had recently earned his first All-Star selection. In the 2021 season, Franco showcased his exceptional skills with a batting average of .281, an on-base percentage of .344, and a slugging percentage of .475. He hit 17 home runs and drove in 58 runs over 112 games. Franco had signed a lucrative 11-year, $182 million contract extension in November 2021, but with a team option in 2033, the deal could have been worth up to $233 million.
