McIlroy’s Change of Heart
Irish golfer Rory McIlroy, previously critical of players leaving the PGA Tour, has now expressed his support for their return.
In July 2022, McIlroy had urged those who left the PGA Tour to stay away. However, on Tuesday at Pebble Beach, he seemed more than willing to welcome those players back with open arms.
McIlroy stated, “If people still have eligibility on this tour and they want to come back and play or you want to try and do something, let them come back.” This is a significant change of heart for the golfer, who admitted to having “changed [his] tune” on the matter.
Unity for the Good of the Game
In a bid for unity, McIlroy emphasized the importance of having a strong PGA Tour and LIV Tour.
He highlighted the negative impact of having diminished tours, stating, “It would be much better being together and moving forward together for the good of the game.”
McIlroy expressed his opinion that there should be no punishment for players wanting to return to the PGA Tour. He believes that bringing both tours together and creating the strongest fields possible would greatly benefit the sport of golf.
Rahm’s Decision and Ryder Cup Implications
McIlroy understands and respects Jon Rahm’s decision to join LIV, despite his disappointment at not competing against Rahm more regularly.
McIlroy praised Rahm for wanting to prioritize his family life and commended his desire to be a good father and husband. He acknowledged that everyone should make decisions that they feel are best for themselves.
Rahm’s move to LIV has prompted McIlroy to call for a revision of the rules for Ryder Cup eligibility in the European Tour. McIlroy expressed his strong desire to have Rahm on the next Ryder Cup team, considering him a crucial asset.
McIlroy’s statement comes after previously mentioning that Rahm should have been on the USA team, and Rahm later proved his worth as the sole LIV golfer in the 2023 Ryder Cup.
Potential Deal Between the Two Leagues
The ongoing discussions about a potential deal between the PGA Tour and LIV were announced back in June.
Both leagues are still in talks to solidify the agreement that could reshape the future of professional golf. Further updates on the progress of these negotiations are anticipated.
