Delayed Justice: Apologies and Questions
Tragic news has emerged as five National Hockey League (NHL) players face charges of sexual assault following an incident that took place in June 2018. London Police Service spokesperson, Troung, revealed that the victim met “the accused and several teammates” at a bar in downtown London after an event. The victim was then allegedly invited to a hotel room where the assault occurred.
The initial investigation into the incident lasted from June 2018 until February 2019, and it was closed due to “insufficient grounds to lay a charge,” according to Troung. However, law enforcement has now issued an apology for the extended duration it took to bring the case to this point. Troung apologized “to the victim, to her family for the amount of time that it has taken to reach this point.” This apology also acknowledged the difficulty faced by all victims and survivors of sexual violence.
Challenging Questions Surrounding the Investigation
The media questioned law enforcement about the process of the initial investigation and the length of time it took for charges to be filed. While Troung did not admit to a mistake in the initial investigation, he emphasized that the apology was directed at the victim due to the prolonged process. “This should not take this long. It shouldn’t take years and years for us to arrive at the outcome of today,” he stated. Troung further asserted that all victims of sexual violence should not have to endure such extensive delays.
Moving forward, the police service aims to improve their investigation of sexual violence cases. Troung affirmed their commitment to bettering their practices, stating, “Our commitment remains strong and will continue every day. We will strive to be better and better.”
The Investigation Takes a New Turn
During a press conference, Detective Sgt. Katherine Dann provided additional details on the investigation. She revealed that law enforcement received a call on June 19, 2018, from someone related to the victim, seeking advice regarding a sexual assault. This call led to the initiation of the initial investigation. Dann explained that in July 2022, the London police decided to review the case, leading to the discovery of new information. This new evidence played a crucial role in the decision to file charges against the five individuals involved.
Dann emphasized the victim’s active participation in the investigation, from the initial report to the present. She clarified that the evidence collected in 2018 and 2019, in addition to new evidence, formed the basis for charging the defendants with sexual assault. However, the specifics of the case have not been disclosed as the investigation is ongoing.
Legal Proceedings and Protections
The four NHL players accused of sexual assault have taken an indefinite leave of absence from their respective clubs. Lawyers representing all five defendants have vehemently denied any wrongdoing on behalf of their clients. During a virtual court appearance, the attorneys waived the reading of the charges. The next court date is scheduled for April 30.
In an effort to protect the privacy of the accuser and key witnesses, the judge issued an order preventing anyone involved from publicly sharing identifiable information.
This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
