Unique Compilation Features Over 100 Colorful Hockney-esque Drawings
LA-based artist Michael McGregor has recently published a book titled “Room Service,” which showcases more than 100 vibrant illustrations inspired by hotel stationery from around the world. The compilation includes artwork drawn on the stationery of prestigious establishments such as The Ritz Carlton, Chateau Marmont, and Claridge’s.
McGregor, currently in Paris, fell ill during an interview with ES Magazine. Despite the chilly weather, the artist shared insights about his book and personal experiences with hotels.
“Room Service” Chronicles McGregor’s Artistic Journey
When asked about his creative process, McGregor revealed that he drew on site in some hotels and relied on memory for others. He explained that he found inspiration in the juxtaposition of the refined hotel masthead with his loose drawing style. McGregor believed that setting his artwork in a specific place added a unique dimension to the illustrations.
Magical and Memorable Hotels
McGregor shared stories of his favorite and least favorite hotels. He described Deetjen’s, a century-old hotel in Big Sur, California, as a mystical and charming retreat nestled in ancient redwood forests. On the other hand, McGregor recalled a less pleasant experience on Ko Bu Bu, a small island in Thailand, where encounters with large spiders and lizards disrupted the serene environment.
A Preference for Sunshine and Hotels
The artist expressed a preference for sunny climates and the abundance of orange trees found in places like Los Angeles and Athens, where he currently resides. McGregor also shared his disdain for generic Airbnb accommodations, favoring the unique experiences offered by hotels or personally-rented houses.
Transitioning from Corporate Life to Art
McGregor discussed his decision to leave a corporate job in his 30s and pursue a career in the art world. He explained that he didn’t want to regret not devoting his efforts to his passion for visual art. The move to Mexico City was prompted by his growing connection to the country through a radio show and friendships.
Future Plans and Inspirations
Looking ahead, McGregor revealed plans for an upcoming exhibition in LA, followed by shows in New York and Berlin. He expressed a desire to exhibit his work in Seoul, citing the city’s unique blend of modernity and ancient traditions. When asked about his favorite piece in the collection, McGregor found it impossible to choose, comparing the illustrations to his own children.
Appreciating Hotel Stationery
McGregor also discussed his appreciation for the elegant stationery found in hotels such as Chateau Marmont, The Ritz London, and Hotel La Ponche. He explained that these materials added a special touch to his artistic process.
McGregor’s book, “Room Service,” will be released on March 26th, accompanied by an exhibition in LA.
