Highly Regarded Offensive Mind
ESPN reported on Saturday that Kliff Kingsbury, a highly regarded offensive mind, has taken himself out of the running for the offensive coordinator position at Washington. His agent, Erik Burkhardt, confirmed the decision.
Joining the Commanders
Instead, Kingsbury has joined the Commanders, making things very intriguing for the team and the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft. The Commanders, who had a dismal season under Ron Rivera, hold the No. 2 overall pick in the draft. This move could potentially lead to trade speculations between Washington and Chicago to secure quarterback Caleb Williams, who many project as the first overall pick.
Bringing the Air Raid Offense
Kingsbury’s addition as the Commanders’ offensive coordinator brings his signature Air Raid offense to a team with promising young talent at wide receiver. Players like Terry McLaurin, Jahan Dotson, and Curtis Samuel have already shown their potential in Eric Bieniemy’s offense. Additionally, rookie quarterback Sam Howell demonstrated his abilities in the passing game, throwing for just under 4,000 yards in his first season.
Bieniemy’s Future
With Kingsbury now on board, it seems that Eric Bieniemy, who is technically still under contract with Washington, will need to find a new role in the NFL. Teams in search of an experienced offensive coordinator may have the opportunity to acquire Bieniemy if he hits the open market.
Head Coaching Experience
Aside from his offensive expertise, Kingsbury also brings head coaching experience to the table. He previously served as the head coach of the Cardinals, where he led the team to an 11-6 record and a postseason berth in 2021. During his tenure, the Cardinals averaged 23.6 points per game.
