Country Music Star Reflects on Past Drug Use
Renowned country music artist, Jelly Roll, has been candid about his struggle with addiction and his journey towards recovery. Having served time for a crack cocaine charge in the past, Jelly Roll has now opened up about his complex relationship with alcohol.
Reevaluating His Relationship with Alcohol
Jelly Roll admits that he used to view alcohol as a means to avoid feeling like a drug addict. He shared, “I thought [drinking] was to make us not feel like drug addicts. Nobody wants to snort cocaine sober, then you’re a drug addict. But I had to re-look at my relationship with alcohol like that.”
While Jelly Roll clarifies that he never really had a problem with alcohol, he now consumes it sparingly, especially this year. He reserves it for special occasions, like the night of the Country Music Awards, where he recently won an award.
Finding Peace with the Past
Jelly Roll has made significant progress in making peace with his past. Although he acknowledges that his past still haunts him, he confidently states, “I don’t think about doing no drugs today. As far as today goes, I’m happy.”
One key factor contributing to his happiness is his commitment to giving back. Jelly Roll travels to centers across the country, sharing his music, delivering food, and providing encouragement. He believes that if he has been given the gift of making people happy, he should utilize that gift to its fullest potential.
Support Systems and Recovery
While Jelly Roll did not attend rehab for his own addiction issues, he does attend meetings when he feels the need for support. He affirms that he occasionally attends meetings out of respect for those who have successfully overcome their addictions.
Jelly Roll also credits his family for playing a significant role in his recovery. Coming from what he affectionately refers to as a “big ole white trash” family in Nashville, he finds solace and stability in their support. For Jelly Roll, being a father is of utmost importance, and he considers the birth of his daughter during his time in prison as a life-altering event that changed everything for him.
Jelly Roll is a man who acknowledges that he is still figuring things out. He recognizes that he comes from a place where few have found the answers, but he remains committed to his journey of growth and recovery.
