Secretary of State emphasizes the importance of national security
In a statement, Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed the urgent need for Congress to take swift action in advancing the national security interests of the United States by providing assistance to Ukraine. Blinken highlighted the support of over 50 countries in the coalition that is crucial for Ukraine’s defense and secure future.
Administration pushes for approval of multibillion-dollar aid package
The administration has been urging Congress to approve a multibillion-dollar national security supplemental package that was initially requested in October. However, Republican lawmakers have linked the additional aid of $60 billion to changes in border security policies as a prerequisite for its passage.
Package includes vital military equipment
The proposed package includes military equipment such as air defense weapons, artillery ammo, anti-armor gear, and over 15 million rounds of ammunition. Defense Department comptroller Mike McCord emphasized the urgency of passing the aid package, stating that once the funds are obligated, the department will have exhausted the available funding for security assistance to Ukraine.
Continued aid crucial for Ukraine’s fight for freedom
The Department of Defense’s letter to Congress’s defense committees stressed the essential nature of Congress acting promptly on the pending supplemental request. The letter emphasized that providing assistance to Ukraine is in the clear national interest of the United States and vital for Ukraine’s ongoing fight for freedom and countering Russian aggression.
Significant financial aid sent to Ukraine
The federal government has already allocated upwards of $100 billion in aid to Ukraine since the Russian invasion began, with over $46 billion designated for military assistance. The $250 million in aid currently under consideration falls under the Presidential Drawdown Authority, allowing the President to allocate defense resources from existing U.S. military stocks to other nations without requiring additional approval.
Public support for aid to Ukraine shows a decline
According to the most recent Fox News Poll, public support for sending financial aid to Ukraine has declined. While a majority of 54% favored aid in January, the number has now dropped to 35%. The poll reflects a downward shift in support for continuing aid to Ukraine.
