Protests Cause Chaos at Prestigious Tennis Tournament
At the prestigious Italian Open in Rome, chaos ensued as climate protesters interrupted two matches, causing delays and outrage among spectators and players alike.
On-Court Disruption
During US player Madison Keys’ match against Sorana Cîrstea, protesters donning orange vests stormed the court, halting play as both players were forced to retreat to the locker rooms. The disruptive protesters sat on the playing surface before being removed by security staff, much to the dismay of the audience.
Stand Protest
Simultaneously, in another area of the tournament, protesters glued themselves to the stands, further aggravating the situation. Police officers and firefighters were called in as tensions escalated, creating a chaotic scene at the event.
Ultima Generazione’s Message
The protest group, Ultima Generazione (Last Generation), claimed responsibility for the disruptions, citing the urgent need for action on the climate and social crises. In a social media post, the group emphasized the need for immediate intervention and called for a reparations fund for climate disasters.
Resumed Matches and Outcome
After the protesters were removed, the matches resumed, with Keys ultimately triumphing over Cîrstea and advancing to the quarterfinals. The disruption did not deter Keys from securing a 6-2 6-1 victory. Similarly, in a doubles match, Marcelo Arévalo and Mate Pavić emerged victorious after the disturbances subsided.
The Italian Open organizers acknowledged Ultima Generazione’s presence in Rome for discussions on climate proposals and confirmed previous protests by the group. The statement underscored the environmentalists’ call for immediate action to address the pressing climate crisis.
