Patriots’ Record
The New England Patriots, with a disappointing 3-11 record, have already been eliminated from playoff contention. This fact spared coach Bill Belichick and the team from further embarrassment when the Kansas City Chiefs decided not to run up the score in their recent game.
Respect for Coach Belichick
When questioned about the decision, Chiefs’ coach Andy Reid cited respect for Belichick as the reason behind their choice. Reid stated, “Yeah, I mean it was the right thing to do.” While this display of good sportsmanship was commendable, it may not have been well-received by everyone.
Impact on Betting Odds
The Chiefs’ decision to take a knee instead of trying for another score had an impact on the betting odds. According to Pat Morrow, head oddsmaker at Bovada, “The Chiefs were below 10-pt favorites with us at Bovada right up until noon ET when they moved from -9.5 to -10. It was only at five minutes to kickoff that we moved one last time to Kansas City -10.5.” This change in odds frustrated some bettors who were late to the party.
Speculation Surrounding Belichick’s Future
With another loss for the Patriots, speculation about Belichick’s future with the franchise continues to grow. Despite reports suggesting that owner Robert Kraft has made up his mind about moving on from him, the Chiefs expressed admiration for Belichick after the game. Reid praised him, saying, “He’s done an unbelievable job, best in the business, ever. That’s what you’re talking about, so, yeah. I don’t question it. I know how great he is, and I’ve got to deal with him by playing against him, so nobody better, not that I’ve gone against. Nobody better.”
