Brian Wilson’s Heartfelt Tribute
The music industry mourns the loss of Jeff Foskett, longtime friend and guitarist for the Beach Boys. Brian Wilson, co-founder of the iconic band, expressed his deep sorrow, stating, “I’m so heartbroken that my dear friend Jeff Foskett has passed.” Wilson praised Foskett’s immense talent as a musician, musical leader, and angelic singer. Reflecting on their friendship since 1976, Wilson emphasized Foskett’s unwavering support during their tours, acknowledging that their success would not have been possible without him. Wilson concluded his tribute with a heartfelt message of love and compassion for Foskett’s family and friends, vowing to remember him forever.
A Serendipitous Meeting
Foskett himself recalled the fateful encounter that led to his long-lasting friendship with Brian Wilson. Knocking on Wilson’s door in Bel Air back in 1976, Foskett received a warm welcome and an invitation inside. This meeting marked the beginning of a lifelong bond between the two musicians. Foskett fondly remembered Wilson’s words, “Stay in touch,” words that he took to heart and cherished in the years to come.
A Journey with the Beach Boys
Soon after their first meeting, Foskett joined the Beach Boys’ Endless Summer Band, at the invitation of another co-founder, Mike Love. When Carl Wilson decided to pursue a solo career, Love suggested Foskett as his replacement. However, a few years later, Carl returned, causing uncertainty among the band members. Foskett vividly recalled a rehearsal where tensions ran high as changes were imminent. Fortunately, Dennis Wilson reassured Foskett of his place in the band, providing a much-needed sense of belonging.
Despite leaving the Beach Boys in 1990 to pursue his solo career, Foskett rejoined Brian Wilson in 1998, embarking on another chapter of touring together. The guitarist continued to share his musical talents with Wilson and the Beach Boys until 2013 when he took a temporary break. In 2014, under Mike Love’s leadership, Foskett returned to the Beach Boys, showcasing his dedication to the band and their timeless harmonies. Unfortunately, in 2018, Foskett received a terminal cancer diagnosis, yet he defied the odds, bravely fighting for an additional five years. Sadly, Foskett passed away earlier this month, leaving behind a remarkable legacy.
Tributes from Fellow Musicians
As news of his passing spread, tributes poured in from fellow musicians. Brian Wilson’s collaborator and friend, Al Jardine, expressed his admiration for Foskett’s talent and resilient spirit. Jardine highlighted Foskett’s humor and positivity, which helped him navigate the challenges of the music industry. He concluded by sending his thoughts to Foskett’s family, friends, and fans, remembering the joy they shared.
Acclaimed singer-songwriter Carole King also paid her respects, recalling Foskett’s contribution to her album and his faithful recreation of the Beach Boys’ sound on their collaboration. King expressed her gratitude and bid Foskett farewell, wishing him a peaceful journey.
The passing of Jeff Foskett leaves a void in the music world. His talent, infectious laughter, and guiding spirit will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. As the Beach Boys continue their musical journey, they will forever carry the memory of their dear friend and musical companion, Jeff Foskett.
