Mailers and Texts Encourage Democratic Enrollment
Mailers and texts urging Jewish voters to enroll as Democrats have been sent to residents in New York’s 16th Congressional District. The messages, organized by a group called the Teach Action Fund, aim to mobilize voters in support of incumbent Congressman Jamaal Bowman. However, the mailers do not mention Bowman or his opponent George Latimer, the current county executive of Westchester County. Instead, they emphasize the importance of combating antisemitic hate and making voices heard.
Controversies Surrounding Bowman’s Campaign
Bowman’s re-election campaign has faced controversies over his previous remarks and actions. He received criticism for calling for a cease-fire shortly after the war between Israel and Hamas. He also faced backlash for boycotting Israeli President Isaac Herzog’s speech to Congress and defending Rep. Pramila Jayapal’s comment that Israel is a “racist state.” Additionally, an event aimed at promoting healing amid antisemitism turned into protesters demanding that Bowman represent Jews in his district’s policy decisions.
Latimer Emerges as Potential Challenger
George Latimer, a veteran of New York politics, has emerged as a potential challenger to Bowman. He announced his run in December, emphasizing his commitment to listening to all voices and delivering on important issues. Latimer has received support from New York Jewish groups and Democratic donors.
Teach Action Fund’s Inclusive Voter Education Program
The Teach Action Fund, responsible for the mailers and texts, aims to ensure that all Jewish residents and unaffiliated voters are registered. The group’s political director, Dan Mitzner, stated that the program is critical due to the alarming rise in antisemitic rhetoric and incidents. Mitzner emphasized the need for a Congressperson who prioritizes the safety and well-being of the Jewish community.
Race Heats Up with Voter Mobilization Efforts
The race between Bowman and Latimer is expected to be fiercely competitive. Bowman’s campaign accuses Latimer of hosting a fundraiser with a Trump mega-donor and welcoming Republican-funded Super PACs, suggesting that efforts to register Jewish Republicans and Independents as Democrats aim to boost Latimer’s chances in the primary. Voter education offices have been opened to assist with registration and provide information on absentee ballots.
Both campaigns have yet to respond to requests for comment.
