Far Left Democrat Leadership Blamed
New York has become a population exodus hotspot, with over 100,000 residents leaving the state in just one year, according to the latest Vintage 2023 population estimates. The consequences of Far Left Democrat leadership have taken a toll on the state, as stated by House Republican Conference Chairwoman Rep. Elise Stefanik. She pointed out that the alarming population loss is a direct result of the unlivable conditions and excessive crime rates caused by Albany Democrats. Stefanik warned that if the safety and prosperity of New Yorkers are not prioritized, there will soon be no residents left to fund their radical programs.
Declining States Show Slowed Population Decline
In 2023, eight states experienced a decline in population, collectively losing 249,161 residents. However, this decline represents a slowdown compared to the previous year, where the loss was 509,789. While these states have been losing population since 2020, the U.S. Census Bureau reports a deceleration in their decline.
New York City Sees Influx of Migrants
Contrary to the state’s overall population loss, New York City has welcomed more than 150,100 migrants since the spring of 2022. The city has been working with New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ office to resettle asylum seekers across the state. Despite this influx, as of July 2023, New York remains the fourth most populous state in the nation, with over 19.5 million residents.
Red States Experience Population Growth
The U.S. Census Bureau’s report reveals that red states, in particular, have seen population growth in 2023, with Americans fleeing blue states. As more states across the country experience an increase in population, the growth is now more evenly distributed. In 2022, four southern states (Texas, Florida, North Carolina, and Georgia) accounted for 93% of the nation’s population growth. However, in 2023, this percentage dropped to 67%. Texas had the largest numeric change, adding 473,453 residents, followed by Florida with 365,205. South Carolina and Florida were the fastest-growing states, with growth rates of 1.7% and 1.6%, respectively, in 2023.
