MetLife Stadium’s Soccer Legacy
MetLife Stadium, known for hosting various soccer matches, will be the venue for the World Cup Final. Notably, a match between Manchester United and Arsenal in July 2023 attracted a record-breaking crowd of 82,262 spectators, marking the highest attendance in the stadium’s soccer history.
Tournament Hosts and Opening Match
The FIFA World Cup 26 will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The tournament will commence with the opening match held in Mexico City, featuring the Mexican national team against an opponent yet to be determined.
US Men’s National Team Journey
The US men’s national team will begin their World Cup journey in Los Angeles, playing their first match at SoFi Stadium on June 12. They will remain on the West Coast for all of their group-stage matches, with two additional matches scheduled in Seattle.
Semifinals and Quarterfinals Locations
The semifinals matches will take place at AT&T Stadium in Dallas and Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. For the quarterfinals, matches will be held at SoFi Stadium, Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, and Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
Unique Planning for the Tournament
FIFA’s planning for this tournament differs from the usual format involving a single country. The challenge of managing four time zones across three countries while prioritizing the welfare of players and fans required careful consideration. To minimize travel and maximize preparation and recovery time, teams will practice and operate within their designated regions corresponding to their group stages.
Enhanced Fan Experience and Team Rest
By keeping teams within specific regions, FIFA aims to reduce the need for extensive travel by fans. To ensure optimal preparation and rest, FIFA will provide all teams with three full days between matches. These measures contribute to an enhanced fan experience and the overall success of the tournament.
Expanded Bracket and Historic Milestone
The FIFA World Cup 26 will feature an expanded bracket for the first time in history, accommodating 48 teams instead of the previous 32.
