Background
The Philadelphia Eagles’ security chief, known as “Big Dom” DiSandro, will continue to travel with the team and perform his work-related duties, despite a recent altercation during a game against Dec. 3. The incident occurred when DiSandro pulled off San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw from Eagles star receiver DeVonta Smith and shouted at him after a reception in the third quarter.
Postseason Permission
Although the Eagles have already secured a postseason spot, DiSandro will be allowed to be on the sidelines during playoff games.
Fines and Penalties
Greenlaw was penalized for unnecessary roughness during the altercation and later fined $10,927 by the NFL. DiSandro was immediately asked to leave the field and received a rousing ovation from Eagles fans as he walked to the locker room.
NFL’s Policy Memo
The league sent a memo to all teams emphasizing the policy that prohibits non-player personnel from making physical contact, taunting, or directing insults towards opposing players or officials. The memo stated that only game officials or coaches should intervene to break up altercations. Violations of this policy may result in fines or suspensions.
Appeal Process and Meeting with Commissioner
During the appeal process, DiSandro met with NFL Commissioner to discuss the incident.
DiSandro’s Role with the Eagles
DiSandro has been with the Eagles since 1999 and also serves as a senior adviser to general manager Howie Roseman. In addition to his security chief responsibilities, he oversees all safety and security matters for players, coaches, and executives. This includes managing security at the team’s training complex, coordinating security measures for team travel, and providing education on the NFL’s personal conduct policy.
