Security Breach
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol’s office reported a breach in the personal emails of a staff member just before Yoon’s Europe trip in November. The unidentified employee’s personal account, used for official duties in contravention of security protocols, was compromised.
Immediate Response
Yoon’s office clarified that the breach did not affect the overall security system. Necessary measures were taken upon detection to safeguard Yoon’s visit abroad. Although the office faces persistent hacking attempts, it stated that the presidential office’s security system remained intact.
North Korean Cyber Threat
North Korea is known for its massive hacking program, allegedly financing its nuclear and missile programs through cyber theft. A U.N. report disclosed 58 suspected cyberattacks by North Korea, amounting to $3 billion. Despite denial of involvement, North Korea has been tied to major cyber incidents in the past.
