Driving Privileges and College Tuition
Indiana State Senator Mark Messmer has recently been at the center of controversy due to his support for legislation that would provide driving privileges and in-state college tuition rates for illegal immigrants residing in the state. The bill proposing driving privileges for illegal immigrants was ultimately killed before reaching a vote in committee, leading to protests by liberal activists who claim that around 100,000 undocumented immigrants are currently driving without a license in Indiana.
Driving Privileges Proposal
The proposed legislation would have allowed illegal immigrants to apply for a learner’s permit and driving card, granting them driving privileges. However, the bill faced significant opposition and was ultimately halted in committee. According to a report by local ABC affiliate WRTV, the inability of undocumented immigrants to obtain licenses has been a cause for concern.
In-State College Tuition Rates
Senator Messmer also co-authored Senate Bill 135, an ongoing piece of legislation that seeks to grant illegal immigrants living in Indiana the same college tuition rates as state residents. This means that out-of-state American citizens attending an Indiana school could end up paying more than undocumented residents. To qualify, an illegal immigrant student must provide an affidavit stating that they have either applied or will apply for legal status with the U.S. government.
Support and Opposition
Supporters of Messmer’s efforts argue that the consequences of unchecked illegal immigration need to be addressed, and that his legislation aims to counteract these challenges. They believe that his bills prioritize border security and enforcement of current immigration laws.
However, critics argue that granting driving privileges and in-state tuition rates to illegal immigrants undermines the integrity of the state’s communities and rewards those who have entered the country unlawfully. They contend that such benefits should be reserved for legal residents and citizens.
Upcoming Election
Senator Messmer, who has consistently supported legislation related to immigration, is currently facing a re-election campaign. His only opponent so far is surgeon Richard Moss. Election analysts predict that the seat will likely remain in Republican hands, making it a safe win for Messmer.
