Dirty Play Leads to Season-Ending Injury
In a shocking turn of events during a game between the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers, Packers defensive lineman Charles Martin delivered a brutal hit on Bears quarterback Jim McMahon. The impact of the hit resulted in McMahon suffering a torn rotator cuff, forcing him to sit out the rest of the season.
Unsettling Premonition
McMahon revealed in an interview with Fox News Digital that he had never spoken to Martin before the incident. However, he had a foreboding feeling that something malicious was coming his way. McMahon suspected that the hit was orchestrated by Packers head coach Forrest Gregg, who had a longstanding dislike for both McMahon and Bears head coach Mike Ditka.
McMahon shared, “I got a heads-up the night before by one of their teammates that said, ‘Our coach doesn’t like you. He said if we had a chance to take a shot on you to do it.’ I was kind of leery of that and there was so much bad blood all those years playing against the Packers.”
Regret and Remorse
On the other side, Martin expressed remorse for his actions. He admitted that he didn’t realize the severity of the play until it received extensive media coverage. Martin confessed, “I felt like I did something real terrible. But it wasn’t intentionally done to try to hurt him, to put him out of the game. I wish I had never done it.”
Later Career and Tragic End
Despite the incident, McMahon went on to join the Packers in the later years of his career, providing support as a backup to Brett Favre. As for Martin, he continued his football journey with the Houston Oilers and Atlanta Falcons after the 1986 season. Tragically, Martin passed away in 2005.
