McCarthy’s Decision-Making Almost Gives Game Away
Entering Saturday’s game, the Cowboys had struggled against teams in playoff contention, winning just two out of seven matchups. The game against the Lions almost added to their losing record, but a series of dramatic events saved the day.
Inside the two-minute warning, head coach Mike McCarthy made a questionable call, saving the Lions from burning a timeout. The Cowboys settled for a field goal, taking a 20-13 lead with 1:41 left on the clock. However, the Lions quickly responded with a touchdown and successfully converted a two-point conversion, putting them in a position to win the game.
But a penalty flag was thrown as an offensive lineman caught the touchdown pass without reporting himself as eligible. The Lions had to retry the two-point conversion, only to be intercepted by the Cowboys. However, their celebration was short-lived as Micah Parsons was called for an offside penalty, giving the Lions another attempt.
On the third try, the Lions’ pass fell incomplete, and the Cowboys held on to their lead. The Lions attempted an onside kick but failed. Despite McCarthy’s questionable decision-making, the Cowboys managed to secure the victory.
Lamb Shines in Cowboys’ Offense
Amidst the chaos, Cowboys’ wide receiver CeeDee Lamb had an outstanding performance. In the first quarter, Lamb caught a 92-yard touchdown pass, showcasing his explosive playmaking abilities. However, a controversial fumble in the end zone resulted in a touchback, denying him a second score.
Lamb finished the game with 227 receiving yards, breaking multiple records in Cowboys history. He now holds the franchise record for most receptions and receiving yards in a single season, surpassing the legendary Michael Irvin. With 122 catches for 1,651 yards this season, Lamb currently leads the league in both categories.
Cowboys’ Playoff Hopes Remain Alive
With the win, the Cowboys improved to an 11-5 record, keeping their hopes of winning the NFC East division title alive. However, the Washington Commanders still hold control of their own destiny. The Lions, who fell to the same 11-5 record, are also vying for seeding in the playoffs after clinching their first division title since 1993.
The Cowboys will conclude their regular season against the Washington Commanders, while the Lions will host the Minnesota Vikings. The outcome of these games will heavily impact the playoff picture for both teams.
